Calathea White Fusion No. 3
Each morning as I venture into the kitchen, sleepy eyed and searching for coffee, I glance out the window. I notice sunlight streaming in through the blinds bathing my beloved collection of house plants in warmth. The shadows that are cast and the light that glimmers on the waxy surfaces of the leaves is inspiring. I must capture it.
I sketch first in charcoal. Layer upon layer, I attempt to explain the beauty I see each morning with gorgeous pigments and expressive marks. Finally, the unique textures of the leaves are explained by the embroidery embellishments made tediously by hand. My work is done.
Calathea White Fusion No. 3 was inspired by a plant that has eluded my green thumb. Calatheas are beautiful but finicky plants that require filtered water, a very specific amount of light, and perfect temperature conditions. Their beauty is undeniable.
